Tanisi! Teaching young students about sled dogs is a wonderful way to explore responsibility, teamwork, and respect for animals. Sled dogs can teach us so much — from feeding, nutrition, and healthcare to leadership, empathy, and motivation. They show us unconditional love, loyalty, and the value of caring for another being. Students also learn practical skills, social interaction, and teamwork, all while building confidence and life skills. Historically, Indigenous peoples used sled dogs as transportation during the winter months. Working with these dogs allows students to connect with cultural traditions, the past, and the natural world. As students engage with the dogs, they form strong bonds that teach respect, empathy, and compassion. The dogs become more than animals — they become family, and seeing their spirit in action is a healing experience in itself. On the reserve, we understand that a large team of dogs can feel overwhelming for youth. To help students feel comfortable, we begin by introducing one or two dogs from the team. This can happen in the classroom or on the land. As students gain confidence, we gradually introduce more dogs from the dog boxes. Students learn the names of the dogs, their positions, and their roles on the team, emphasizing the importance of working together. Students also get hands-on experience with the equipment: harnesses, ganglines, and sleds, learning the differences and functions of each. Younger students have the chance to ride in the sled and go around the trail, while adults can join their children. Older youth, staff, and adults may have the opportunity to drive a small team if they feel comfortable. A trained staff member always accompanies participants on a secondary sled for safety. We look forward to welcoming you this winter!
